Wasgamuwa Safari

Wasgamuwa National Park, located between the Matale and Polonnaruwa districts of Sri Lanka, is one of the island’s most beautiful and ecologically diverse wildlife sanctuaries. Surrounded by the scenic Mahaweli and Amban rivers, the park is renowned for its unspoiled wilderness, peaceful atmosphere, and remarkable biodiversity, offering an authentic safari experience away from the larger tourist crowds.

The park’s varied landscapes of open grasslands, dry evergreen forests, wetlands, and riverbanks provide the perfect habitat for an extraordinary range of wildlife. Wasgamuwa is especially famous for its large population of wild Asian elephants, while also sheltering elusive leopards, sloth bears, sambar deer, crocodiles, monkeys, and a rich variety of birdlife. With more than 140 recorded bird species, the park is considered a paradise for birdwatchers and wildlife photographers exploring Sri Lanka’s natural heritage.

Originally declared a protected reserve during the British colonial era in the early twentieth century, Wasgamuwa later evolved into the remarkable national park it is today. Beyond its wildlife significance, the region also preserves an important cultural legacy, with ancient Buddhist temples, archaeological ruins, and historic connections to the ancient kingdoms of Sri Lanka.

Blending breathtaking landscapes, rich wildlife encounters, and cultural heritage, Wasgamuwa National Park offers a truly immersive experience for nature lovers, safari enthusiasts, photographers, and travellers seeking to discover Sri Lanka’s hidden wilderness.
