Kalpitiya Dolphin Watching
Dolphins, often regarded as the most intelligent beings in the water, are known for their friendly and playful nature. Off the coast of Kalpitiya, various dolphin species gather in large schools. Once hunted for their meat, dolphins are now a protected species in Sri Lanka, leading to an increase in their numbers. The clean, warm waters here provide an ideal habitat for these playful creatures.
The prime time for dolphin watching is from November to April when they migrate from colder waters. During this period, you can spot common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, spinner dolphins, Risso’s dolphins, and humpback dolphins.
Sri Lanka Day Tours offers boat trips to the best dolphin-watching spots, where you can witness different dolphin species leaping out of the water or surfacing for air. You’ll also have the chance to hear them communicate and play in these rich waters.
The waters around Kalpitiya are also home to a few whale species, mostly sperm whales, visible during this period. Unlike the playful dolphins, these magnificent giants are more elusive, making it a rare and lucky experience to spot one.
